Ahhh, three year olds!

Wanted to share a little funny conversation that I just had with my three year old daughter, Ariya.

We are eating all our meals on the floor at present as we don’t have any furniture but even if we did I would guess half our meals will still be eaten on the floor as we eat with other families members at least once a day.

As our lunch today was coming to a end I noticed that Ariya had slipped away without me noticing. I called her back and the conversation went like this:

Me: “Ariya come here”

Ariya: “Yes Daddy”

Me: “Are you finished”

Ariya “Yes”

Me: “Did you ask to get down”

Ariya: “No, we don’t have a table, Ariya can’t get down, silly Daddy”

Back from the dead!

Talk about a quick turnaround. It was only about days ago that my Brother in law Khum collapsed and ended up in an ICU. You can read about it here.
Well about 2 hours ago he arrived back home!
I don’t blame him for coming home really as due to over crowding he had been having to stay outside on the hospital balcony while his wife Daeng slept under the bed! We offered to pay for them to have a private room but they wouldn’t have a bar of it.
He has lost a tremendous amount of weight (Daeng has lost some as well) and frankly he looks terrible but he is still managing to crack a few jokes and force a few smiles. He told me he thought he was going to die when it happened.
Thai people don’t often show much a emotion so it was nice to see a crowd quickly form to welcome him home. Tractors full of workers going past the house would jam on the breaks and pile off the trailer to welcome them back. The women to see Daeng and the men to look at Khums scar! It is a doozy let me tell you!

As for out health. I have good news. Marisahs diarrhea has dried up (pun intended) only to be replaced with a cold. Give me a cold any day! Ariya is back to 100% apart from an infected toe that has been ongoing since the day I left for Laos. I forgot to mention about Marisah falling off a chair abut 10 days ago – this is what she looked like when I got home although it has almost cleared up now.

Unfortunately my sciatica is getting worse. I am basically bed ridden and it is driving me crazy. I hope it will clear up soon.

Loas trip part 3 (final)

Time to finish my trip to Laos story I think! Here is part 1 and part 2.

So we had decided to wind up the harvest early as we could see that black wood was still developing and the general consensus was perhaps another 3 months. The carvers finished up at Lunch time so after they had left for the bus station the three of us spent the afternoon packing away chips as well as sorting, weighing and packing pieces as we were all going to take some back with us to test the market and see where would be best to sell and what pieces were the most popular. However the CITES certificate hadn’t come though in time (even though we had applied weeks before – but dealing with pen pushers in Laos is worse then Thailand so I can’t be bothered boring you with those details) As Paul and Sammy were due to go home via Vinh in Vietnam I wanted to get back to Vientiane to try and get a visa for Thailand.
Currently I am just on a 30 day tourist permit. From what I understand I am only allowed three of then in a 180 day period before I need to apply for something more permanent. I thought this would be a good time to do it and had brought all my paperwork with me just in case.
So after a late night packing everything up I hit the sack for my best nights sleep since arriving. I wonder how much of it had to do with that sweet smelling Agarwood that was in my room!

The next morning we had a company meeting over breakfast before I headed west with the products as well as all my gear. I got a lift this time which was so much nicer then going by bus especially with everything I was taking.
We got into Vientiane at 4.30pm and went straight to the phone company Tigo to try and set up my computer online but their service was down so there was nothing they could do! Reminded me of a few days prior when the electricity man turned up at the carving house with a bill for 25,000 kip ($4.50 Aus) for the power. The power had been off all day and he couldn’t see what was so strange when I asked him how I could pay a power bill when we don’t even have any power!
From there it was time to find a hotel to stay. I didn’t want my driver to drive me all over town looking for a good place so I chose the first place I saw and thankfully it was quite nice. Small but clean and comfortable and quiet for $16 US a night.
This hotel was only about 200 metres from the Mekong river which is the border from Thailand so this allowed me to put my Thai sim card back in and make cheaper and clearer calls to Seerung as well as get onto the internet through my laptop.
Because of all my stuff I had to take with me flying was out of the question and to take a bus would involve swapping buses about 4 times to get home so I thought I would hire a car, drive it home then the next morning take it back to the airport at Ubon. Even with the 3,000 baht delivery charge it would still be quicker and cheaper then flying.
The next day the man (Eddie, who we do business with) who had dropped me back to Vientiane had kindly offered to drive me around to help organise a few things. After a lovely breakfast at the Scandinavian bakery we made it to the Thai Embassy 5 minutes before they opened at 8.30am. I had done some research before leaving Thailand and had read that you apply for your Visa in the morning and pick it up the following afternoon. This was no good to me as that day was a Friday and I didn’t want to hang around till Monday afternoon to pick it up.
The main reason for this is because a few days before Seerung had called to tell me of that bad news about Brother in Law Khum being in the ICU of Ubon hospital so that Seerung was having to do a lot more work helping out with his two kids etc and then the day before both Ariya and Marisah had come down with vomiting and diarrhea. Seerung was being overwhelmed so I wanted to get back as soon as I could to help out. I had heard from someone else that it was possible to get it in one day so I thought it was worth a shot. It didn’t work! It would have to be another 30 day visa for me and sort out something more permanent later on.
So after that waste of time we went of in search of a export company who would ship some samples of some wood chips to Italy for testing for us. Once that was organised it was off to get quotes for shipping the boxes to Paul and Sammy once the CITES came through before going to Eddies office to repack the wood that was waiting for CITES into new boxes that we had purchased that morning. While there I checked my emails and discovered that hiring a car wasn’t going to be as easy as I thought. Not sure what to do Eddie then came up with the idea of hiring a car and driver from the border to take me direct home. After the most delicious lunch at a French Restaurant (beef salad for entree, Fish, veges and potato for MAINS, lemon meringue pie for desert and as much bread as you want in a flash(ish) restaurant for $10 US) we went to a travel agent who could organise a car for us. They were too expensive so we made the 20 minute drive to the border and negotiated one for ourselves to leave at 9am this next morning. Back to the hotel where I spent hours catching up on emails and other work related stuff.
The next morning breakfast was once again at the wonderful Bakery (3 egg omelette with veges inside, 1 Croissant, 1 bread roll, 1 hot chocolate, 1 OJ and 1 bowl of fruit for $3.50 US – at least the French left something after their time of rule in Laos!) before driving out to the border and off back home. The trip home can be found here

Fascist Thugs Terrorise Passengers at Bangkok International Airport

Quite a good headline don’t you think? Unfortunately it is true as I am sure a lot of you have already heard on the news.
News like this makes me so angry and at the same time i just shake my head and say TIT (This is Thailand.) I mean how can one of the biggest airports in the world get over run by a bunch of mindless morons like these protesters are just beggars belief.
Anyway, the above headline and the article I am about to paste below are from here and I thought the author summed it up pretty well.
These people have taken it upon themselves to try and change government (twice) after democratic elections in which the people had overwhelmingly decided already at the ballot box who they wanted to be in power. The protesters (PAD) argument is that these people are poor and uneducated and therefore cannot be trusted to make the correct decision. Anyway, enough of my ranting, here is the story.

Bangkok International Airport has now been closed by Fascist thugs from the anti-government PAD. The PAD are demanding that the elected government resigns. This is despite the fact that the government has the backing of the majority of the Thai population and even the majority of Bangkok citizens. This backing has been proven by repeated elections. The PAD want a dictatorship to replace democracy because they deem that the majority of the Thai electorate are too ignorant to deserve the right to vote. How did the PAD thugs manage to seize Bangkok International airport? Airports are supposed to be high security areas. Thai airports are controlled by the Thai military. It is obvious that the Thai military, who staged an illegal coup in 2006, have quietly supported the actions of the PAD. It is obvious that the military is unwilling to provide basic security to air travellers and air crew. But they are happy to rake in huge salaries associated with their control of the Airports Authority. Foreign governments and airlines should reconsider whether the authorities in Thailand are willing to provide international standards of safety and security.

Back in early October, the PAD thugs surrounded parliament to prevent the Prime Minister from making a policy speech. When the police used tear gas to try to disperse the PAD, the police were roundly condemned by the Thai media and most Middle-Class intellectuals. It is no secret that the PAD are armed with guns, bombs, knives and wooden batons. They constantly break the law with impunity. Earlier today PAD thugs were filmed by PBS ThaiTV, shooting at taxi drivers who were trying to defend their pro-democracy community radio station. The PAD thugs were holding up pictures of the King. Yesterday the PAD kicked and punched a senior policeman. The police are powerless to act.

The PAD is a Royalist Fascist mob which has powerful backing. Apart from the army, they are supported by the Queen, the so-called Democrat Party, the Courts, the mainstream media and most university academics. What these people have in common is a total contempt for the Thai electorate who are poor. They are angry that the Thai people voted for a government that gave the poor universal health care and other benefits. They want to turn the clock back to a dictatorship which they call “the New Order”. They are hoping that the Courts will now dissolve the ruling party and that an authoritarian “National Government” will be set up.

It is clear that the PAD, the Military, the Democrat Party and the Conservative Establishment would rather see total chaos in Thailand rather than allow democracy to function. This is despite the fact that we face a serious economic crisis. Interestingly the anti-government groups are extreme neo-liberals with little grasp about how to deal with the economic crisis or how to stimulate the economy. Apart from opposing welfare, they have attacked Keynesian policies of the previous Thaksin government.

Where is the King in all this? Throughout the 3 year political crisis, the King has never attempted to diffuse the problem. Many Thais believe he supports the PAD, but it is more likely that the Monarch has always been too weak to intervene in any crisis.

Those who support democracy and social justice in Thailand must condemn the PAD and those advocating a dictatorship. We must be with the pro-democracy Red Shirts, while refusing to support ex-PM Thaksin, who has a record of Human Rights abuses. I hope that all those friends of Thailand abroad will support all our efforts to defend Thai democracy and to defend those of us who may face arrest in the future.

The paperwork saga continues

A few weeks ago I posted about the hassle we were going through getting the correct paperwork so that my two kids could get Thai passports. I last wrote that the saga was over and all we had to do was pick up the paper work. How wrong was I.
When Seerung took her Dad to the hospital yesterday she walked across the road to the offices to pick it up. “Oh no” they said “we need to interview your Dad now” To say Seerung was furious is an understatement although it doesn’t pay to get angry at a government office when you need something as your file will quickly be placed at the bottom of the pile. So after her Dad finished at the hospital they went back to the offices and wasted an hour there before being told “oh no, we need the village head man to come back in now.” Apparently my Father in Law did a pretty good job in restraining Seerung at that time!
So we are still no closer to actually being able to apply for the passports. What’s the bet that when we do go to the passport office, paper work in hand that they send us all the way home because it wasn’t done correctly? Will keep you posted.

Another health update.

Yep time for another as things change as often as the wind around here.
I thought both kids were better. I was wrong. Ariya is on the mend for sure but Marisah is now onto day 6 of very bad diarrhoea.
I have discovered that I have Sciatica and yesterday it was the worst it has been. I was effectively bed ridden all day and night apart from trips to the toilet because guess what? Yep I have what ever marisah has as well!! (Just not as bad thank goodness)
Thankfully today I am feeling a little stronger and I had to be because Seerung had to hire the car (again) and take her Dad to the local hospital. He has Chronic Renal Failure and needs check ups and medicine regularly but missed his last check up because he said he was feeling fine. I think all the stress regarding his son in law has taken its toll and over the last few days he has been getting worse until last night he finally admitted to Seerung that he should go to the Doctors.
As I said, today it seems a little better and I think that is due to the heat pack full of natural herbs that one of the local ladies made up for me yesterday. It made no difference immediately but this morning I could feel a difference for sure. I read on the internet that rest and heat packs seem to be the only thing that may help it. Hopefully the lady is around today so that I can get another one made up. I feel so useless not being able to help Seerung during this time.
So I had the two girls and thankfully that has gone okay. Well apart from the mess running out of Marisah’s nappy, through her pants and down her legs onto the floor….. twice!
Brother in Law Khum has had a return of some very bad stomach pain so I can only hope and pray it is just the body reacting to some major surgery (he was opened from his ribs to his belly button I was told) and not an infection, or even worse, the original problem is still there.
The lady who had the baby from a report I heard yesterday is doing well so there is at least some good news!
Seerung has been just fantastic. Looking after me, the two girls, her Dad and her two nieces – what an amazing woman!
I am really worried about Marisah as she has lost an enormous amount of weight that she never really had in the first place. I guess all I can do is keep her fluids up and keep praying.
