Fourth airline for Ubon Ratchathani

A new airline is expected to start servicing Ubon Ratchathani within the next few months.

Nakhon Chiangmai Air has received approval from The Department of Civil Aviation to begin flights as soon as possible between Chiang Mai and Ubon as well as other regional centres including Udon Thani, Phitsanulok and Nakhon Ratchasima with plans to add Burma at a later stage.

Nakhon Chiangmai Air will use Chiang Mai International Airport as its hub and will fly the French made ATR-72 which is what Laos Airlines currently use.

From two airlines just a month or so ago it quickly became three with Nok Air arriving and now it seems that it may become four! This will be a welcome relief for many locals and visitors as the three current airlines only fly to Bangkok.

I am sure like most things here in Thailand this announcement will not be the end of it and I will keep you updated with further news as it comes to hand.

  1. This service will be most welcome! Only the other day I was wishing it was easier to get up to CM for a weekend.

    • Hi Chris, if it gets off the ground I am sure it will be. There are many people here that I know who suffer the gruelling bus ride between Ubon and ChiangMai but I wonder if they will be prepared to hand over extra money for the convenience of a plane trip.

  2. I’ll believe when I see it.

By the way, no air-bridge when Thai lands in the afternoon. One gets greeted on the tarmac by Nok personal holding umbrellas.

    • Yes for people who have been here a lot longer then I have announcements like this must almost mean nothing to you as this is not the first time something like this has been announced. I made sure I used words like ‘expected’ and ‘may’. Mind you I am an optimist by nature so lets see what happens!

  3. This is very cool news, if it flies. This makes my planning for Sept.-Oct. much easier as I wanted to visit Nakhon Phanom, then down to Ubon and across to Chiang Rai. Thanks for the news tip.

  4. That would be great!
